The
West Hartford Art League presents Art theft is the fourth largest international crime, behind drugs, money laundering, and terrorism, according to Interpol. Over the past few years, the Philadelphia Task force of the FBI has recovered more than $100 million in stolen property and has prosecuted more than 30 individuals. Special agent Whitman, the only full time art theft specialist in the U.S., will discuss the investigation, recovery, and repatriation of stolen art. Some of his most recent recoveries are $50 million worth of paintings stolen from a private estate in Madrid, including two by Spanish master Francesco Goya, five Norman Rockwell paintings stolen from a private gallery in Minneapolis, three of which were recovered in a farmhouse in Brazil, and a 2,000 year old pre-Columbian artifact looted from the royal tomb of the Lord Sipan in Peru. This lecture is presented by the Wadsworth Atheneum, The World Affairs Council and the West Hartford Art League Admission: Call the World Affairs Council 594-4100 for reservations. Admission to the reception is $25 for members of the three organizations, and $30 for the general public.
