From the Managing Director Fall brings several exciting new developments to the West Hartford Art League. Renovations to the Saltbox Gallery will be staring in early September, so please excuse our appearance while we improve physical access to the building to insure that everyone is able to enjoy our gallery exhibitions. We open our exhibition schedule with our annual Faculty Exhibition in the Clubhouse Gallery, where you can meet the faculty and see their work at our opening reception on September 11. The Saltbox opens with an exhibition by Montoya Ortiz, a Chilean born artist you has lived in Buenos Aires, Argentina for the last 15 years. A well known plain aire painter in Argentina, this is his first one person exhibit in the United States. ArtWalk returns to West Hartford Center on September 22 and will run through October 15th. Fall classes will start the week of September 18th and we have planned some new weekend workshops for October, so you can try a new medium in a short time commitment. We have added classes specifically for middle and high school student this fall, and newly retired Hall High school art teacher Marsha Lewis has joined our faculty to teach teen as well as adult drawing classes. We have initiated a weekly "Drop in and Draw" afternoon where for $10 a session you can sketch for two hours with other artists in our Schoolhouse building. Lauren Zarambo, an award winning watercolorist who exhibited in our Saltbox Gallery in 2004, has added a new evening watercolor class to her teaching schedule, and we will be offering digital photography again, a successful class that was started last spring by Craig Norton. In closing, if you are not already a member of the West Hartford Art League we hope you will consider membership this fall. A membership offers you discounts on classes and workshop, allow you to enter our members exhibits, receive our mailing, pre-register for classes and, most importantly support the Art League celebrating its 72nd year! Please see Membership. ROXANNE STACHELEK The

Originated in 2004 by the West Hartford Art League as part of the Sesquicentennial celebration in West Hartford, we have expanded the scope of this annual event with the help of our two partners, and plan to grow this event into an annual art exhibition with the power to draw thousands to our town to shop, stroll through the town, view the art and stay for dinner. "For every dollar we invest in the arts here, there's huge payback in terms of the overall economy," according to Ken Kahn, Executive Director of the Greater Hartford Arts Council, which recently released the local results for a national arts survey by the Washington-based group, Americans for the Arts. They surveyed 91 arts organization throughout our region and found that 4.8 million art attendees spent a total of $99.2 million last year, in addition to the $23 million revenue from admissions to the arts and culture events. The West Hartford Art League is a non-profit 501(c)(3)organization that relies on the support of area businesses to help offset expenses for this events.
