The West Hartford Art League is pleased to announce that the town council voted unanimously on Monday evening, February 11 to approve the installation of the first sculpture in the Art in Public Places program on the grounds at Buena Vista Road. The first piece has been commissioned to sculptor Peter Busby of Cornwall Bridge CT. for a late April installation. Busby is a Connecticut based artist with an extensive collection of public commission’s through-out the country, as well as Denmark. A New York Times review of his work states “Mr. Busby pushes the boundaries of his material, creating his sculptures from intricately woven surfaces that look more like spun sugar than iron blended with carbon.” The first piece will be installed on the grounds of the West Hartford Art League on Buena Vista Road. The Public Art program was initiated as a way to enhance the town with work by contemporary artists in a public setting where it would be available to everyone. The Art League will be building educational outreach programs around this piece, and the subsequent pieces it hopes to commission and install. Major sponsors for the Busby sculpture include Gold sponsors West Farms Mall and The Roosa Family Foundation, and Silver sponsor Blick Art Supplies. For more information on the Art in Public Places program, log onto our website at www.whal.org. The West Hartford Art League is a non-profit 501(c) 3 organization that has been serving the community since 1934. It offers monthly exhibits in its two galleries, year-round classes for all levels of artists, and annual community events such as ArtWalk and Whet Your Palette.
