The event begins at 6:00 PM, with a tasting of this season's Beaujolais nouveau, elegant hors d’ouevres, followed by a talk by Dr. Will Clower (Ph.D. Neuroscience) on his published topic of interest to many. Cost is $25 members of the Art League, Alliance Française, and Charter Oak Cultural Center; $28 non-members. For more information on Alliance Française go to http://www.alliancefrancaisehtfd.org Master Artists Workshops at the West Hartford Art League The West Hartford Art League will be offering Four Master Artists' Workshops for intermediate to advanced artists starting in the Fall of 2002 and running through Spring 2003. Workshops will run from 9:30- 4:30. There will be a 45-minute lunch break each day. Participants may bring or go out for lunch. The fees for the one-day workshops are $100 each. The fee for the two-day workshop is $200. Maximum registration for the one-day workshop is 12, maximum registration for the two day workshop is 15. WHAL members will receive a 15% discount. Zbigniew Grzyb - The use of color in painting - November 9, 2002 This workshop intended for intermediate and advanced artists will investigate realist and abstract painting as a dialogue between composition, balance and color. Emphasis will be placed on the effective utilization of a limited independent space. Students are invited to bring their work for open critique. Participants should bring prepared painting surfaces (Bristol, canvas, masonite, etc.) and their preferred paints (acrylic, oil) or whatever medium they prefer (pencil, charcoal, crayons, pastels, oil pastels, watercolors) along with suitable brushes, palettes or palette paper, and painting knifes. Zbigniew Grzyb is a classically trained painter whose current work emphasizes large abstract paintings. He has been widely exhibited and has recently received awards from the Greater Hartford Arts Council and the Pollock-Krasner Foundation. This workshop was made possible by the generous support of The Edward C. and Ann T. Roberts Foundation, Inc. Chet Kempcynski - Monotype workshop - February 1, snow date February 8, 2003. This workshop will focus on making oil monotypes by first sketching, and then painting an image on glass with brushes and palette knife. This image will then be printed on heavy Stonehenge paper, which can be purchased from the instructor. Participants should bring oil paints, brushes, palette, palette knifes and drawing material (graphite, charcoal, etc). Glass will be supplied. The workshop will be led by Chet Kempcynski, a well-known Hartford painter who has been working with monotypes since 1980. Chet’s work has been exhibited widely in the United States and Europe. This workshop was made possible by the sponsorship of Toni Martin. Cary Smith - An approach to Minimalist Art - March 8, 2003 This course will deal with abstract art in
general and will focus on learning to make minimalist paintings. Students will
spend much of the day making sketches, and then making paintings from selected
drawings. There will be some demonstrations and short group critiques. Cary will
discuss his own work in a question and answer period. Participants are asked to

Cary Smith is a widely exhibited minimalist painter whose work is at the Wadsworth Atheneum and has been featured at the Whitney Biennial. This workshop was made possible by the generous support of The Edward C. and Ann T. Roberts Foundation, Inc. Frank Fedrico - Painterly Pastels - April 12, 2003 This class will focus on the varied uses of the pastel medium. Students will start by making a waterbase underpainting, done on a gesso or pumice prepared surface. From there, we will start our pastel painting. Collage Technique and Creative Exploration with Jonathan Talbot - May 3 and 4, 2003 This workshop will help explore the creative process and teach new collage techniques that eliminate liquid adhesives, drying time, and wrinkling from the collage-assembly process. Investigate a wide variety of subjects including composition, creation of a personal visual vocabulary, sources of creativity, art as process and product, getting past artistic blocks, and more. Additional technical subjects covered include the "paperless" transfer of printed and photocopied images, tissue overlays, and the presentation and framing of finished works, including those with 3-D elements. "The only prerequisites for this workshop are initiative and imagination. " Jonathan Talbot, an internationally known collage artist has exhibited at the National Academy and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, as well as many museums a broad. His works are included in museum collections, as well as private collections worldwide. Taught Summer Art Program at WHAL. Pui-Yee Law will introduce Chinese Watercolor Painting for Children. Studied Chinese painting in Hong Kong as a child and has been a student of many artists including Mr.Wang Fung, retired professor from Taiwan. Member of Tobacco Valley Artists Association, Windsor, CT. Substitute teacher, Enfield and Suffield Public schools since 1999. Ann Sack received a BS in Graphic Design from CCSU. Has taught at Manchester Community College and colored pencil workshops at WHAL. Rebecca
Siegal, BFA Art & Design Education, Pratt Institute has taught in New York
and Connecticut elementary schools and will lead Creative Art Adventures for
