Demonstrations will
include: Plein air painting,and sketching (Sara Prentis 11 -12 , Bob
Norieka 2 -3), glassbead making with Jill
Vasbinder (10
-11), and calligraphy (12 -1),
working with Pastels, (Frank Federico 1-2) Collage, (Hannah Libman 3-4)
and more on the lawn, including (1-2) Pui Yee Law, an artist from the
Asian Academy of Performing Arts and Culture will give a Chinese
Painting and Calligraphy demonstration and (1:30 - 2:30) performance by
Stephanie Sum of the Asian Academy of Performing Arts. Stephanie will be
performing a ribbon dance. This dance is suited to audience
participation by children and adults and is beautiful en plein air. |

Saltbox lawn from 10-4. Meet and mingle with other artists |

paint on our grounds or browse in our Saltbox and Clubhouse Galleries |

| Faculty
member Frank Federico recently slide juried the Southeastern
Pastel Society's International show in Atlanta. He will award prizes
and conduct a three day workshop while there. Frank also recently won the
CPS Honor award at the Members show at Gallery 53 in Meriden, as well as
being one of 83 artists selected from over 700 entries for the
Louisiana Watercolor's International show. |
| Carol
and Peter Ganick will
have a show of their recent work in June at the ETC/Ellen Traut Collection
on Farmington Ave in Hartford. Stay tuned for dates. |
| Dolores
Howard and Joan Roof have exhibited recent oils, watercolors,
collages and pastels in a show titled "Two Friends" in
the Fellowship Hall at Immanuel Congregational Church in Hartford. |
| JoAnne
Bauer, Ph.D. has recently been juried into the Canton Artists Guild.
She currently has artwork in exhibits at Artspace and Artworks Galleries
(where she received an Honorable Mention for her mixed media piece) in
Hartford, WHAL, the Canton Gallery, the Albert Schweitzer Reverence for
Life exhibition in Wethersfield and the Connecticut Audubon Center
Photography exhibit in Glastonbury. |
| Board
member Anne Hebebrand has been appointed President of ArtWorks
in Hartford and was featured in a Java article on March 25,
2002 at the opening of the Clinton Deckert exhibition. |
| Board
member Felix Bronner’s work is part of the 12 Connecticut
Artists exhibition at the Pump House Gallery in Hartford
through May 24. |
| Board
member Carol Terry was recently named to the Board of Directors of
the Charter Oak Cultural Center in Hartford. |
| NEW
FACULTY
Jan Loomis has
returned to the Art League to teach a clay class on Monday evenings.
Please stop by and welcome her back.
Debby Reelitz-Bell has
joined our staff and will teach a calligraphy class on Monday evenings.
Debby recently moved here from Chicago with her husband and has her own
studio in Granby.
Jill Vasbinder is
a glass artist who works out of Farmington, CT. Jill graduated from
Barnard College and was introduced to glass working and taught by Sally
Prash, glass artist, from Massachusetts. Jill teaches flameworking at
Buck's Rock Camp in New Milford, CT where she started the program three
years ago. Jill will be teaching a flameworking/beadmiling class in the
fall. |

Connecticut Historical Society is offering
our members a "Behind the Scenes Tour" of their paintings &
textiles.
Tuesday, May 14th
Tour 6:30-8 p.m. with Wine and cheese reception Cost: $15. Limited
to 20 people.

your spot. Or email info@whal.org.
Bring your artwork, unused art supplies,
frames, art books, posters or any other art related items to our ART
Tag Sale on the Art League grounds June 8th. Items must be
labeled with price. Tables will be provided. 25% of sales will go to the
WHAL. Volunteers are needed. Call Lois McDonald at 693-4981 if you can
help or for information.

New For Spring! !
Mini Workshop for students age 8 and older. Learn to dance the plena!
Saturday, May 18 from 10 a.m.
-12 noon.
In
collaboration with Guakia, Inc., a bi-lingual school in Hartford which
teaches dance, art and music, we will be holding a workshop to learn the
Plena, a traditional county dance of Puerto Rico. Lily Davila, a
professional artist and teacher will instruct the students. Interested
students may then (but are not required to) dance as a group in the Parade
the Circle event on June 1st, hosted by the Connecticut Historical
Society. Join us for some fun! This workshop is free. Schoolhouse
Classroom. (Parents are welcome to participate in the workshop and join
the parade!) Call 521-3732 for information. If students would like to
learn how to make the traditional skirt and top worn while dancing, they
should bring 3 yards of floral cotton material for a skirt, and 1 1/2
yards of a solid color cotton for the top. |
