Master
Artists' Workshops Continue
Cary Smith -
An approach to Minimalist Art - March 8, 2003
This course will
deal with abstract art in general and will focus on learning to make minimalist
paintings. Students will spend much of the day making sketches, and then making
paintings from selected drawings. There will be some demonstrations and short
group critiques. Cary will discuss his own work in a question and answer period.
Participants are asked to bring:
1. 6 small canvas panels, or stretched canvas' (9" x 12", fine tooth
preferred)
2. Oil or acrylic paints, (good selection of colors)
3. Palette knives, small and medium in size
4. Brushes, selection, some for fine detail.
5. Sketchbook, pencils (B, 3B), and eraser, (preferably plastic)
6. Paper towels
7. Metal ruler, 18" -36"
8. Personal painting supplies.
Participants
will spend much of the day making sketches, and then making paintings from
selected drawings. There will be some demonstrations, critiques and question and
answer period in the afternoon. Cary
Smith is a widely exhibited minimalist painter whose work is at the Wadsworth
Atheneum and has been featured at the Whitney Biennial.

- Painterly Pastels - April 12, 2003
This class will
focus on the varied uses of the pastel medium. Students will start by making a
waterbase underpainting, done on a gesso or pumice prepared surface. From there,
we will start our pastel painting. Frank
Federico trained at John McCrady Art School, SW Louisiana
Institute, New Orleans Academy of Art. He teaches at numerous art
associations, is Past President Connecticut Pastel Society. PSA

Collage
Technique and Creative Exploration with Jonathan Talbot - May 3 and 4, 2003
This workshop
will help explore the creative process and teach new collage techniques that
eliminate liquid adhesives, drying time, and wrinkling from the collage-assembly
process. Investigate a wide variety of subjects including composition, creation
of a personal visual vocabulary, sources of creativity, art as process and
product, getting past artistic blocks, and more. Additional technical subjects
covered include the "paperless" transfer of printed and photocopied
images, tissue overlays, and the presentation and framing of finished works,
including those with 3-D elements. "The only prerequisites for this
workshop are initiative and imagination. " Jonathan Talbot, an
internationally known collage artist has exhibited at the National Academy and
the Museum of Modern Art in New York, as well as many museums a broad. His works
are included in museum collections, as well as private collections worldwide.

will be held at the West Hartford Art League's Schoolhouse building at 87

Dates
Announced for Summer Art Program for Young People
Camp
for Kids ages 5-14 will be offered for four one-week sessions in July
starting the week of
June 30 and running until July 25th. Classes are
grouped according to age and are held in our
air-conditioned Clubhouse
and Schoolhouse buildings. Classes are taught by experienced art
teachers. Summer Art Camp runs daily from 9:15 until 12:15 and each
session costs $125.

Hilary
Kenyon, WHAL Assistant Treasurer, has a one woman show, Travels,
at Duncaster, 49 Loeffler Road, Bloomfield through February 28, 2003.
Member Anne Hebebrand’s exhibit of recent paintings, Square
Reflections, was at the John Bryan Gallery in Farmington.
WHAL Members Jean McQuillan, Douglas Smith and Joan Paul were among seven
accomplished artists who won awards for their work in the 33rd
Annual Juried Members Exhibition at the New Britain Museum of American
Art this fall.
Felix Bronner, advisor to the new Master Artists Workshops program, will
exhibit his works atTrustee Carol Terry was recently appointed Secretary of the
Board of the Greater Hartford Arts Council.
